Ship Broking is a fascinating opportunity to become involved in the world of international trade through its direct association with ships of all types working cargoes within a wide variety of port offices around the U.K. It is, in many ways, the big sister to the airline industry in its personal and professional demands.
All of the high expectations placed on candidates are similar to those seeking careers within airlines, including personal discipline, presentation, initiative and responsibility. The job requires individuals who wish to develop these personal attributes within a sector of international business which will also bring out the best in areas of communication, organisation, leadership and administration.
GP Shipping is a UK market leader in the provision of port agency services to international ship owners. Handling over 5000 ship calls per year, the Company has achieved its success by providing an innovative service in a traditional business sector. The application of modern techniques and a highly motivated staff have placed the Company at the forefront of the industry. In turn, this has created a requirement for an annual intake of trainees to maintain the successful growth.
Initial training with GP Shipping embraces on-the-job education as well as a series of modular tests which lead to a range of globally recognised qualifications. These in turn can provide enormous career opportunities.
A three year induction programme for candidates sees them join the Company at age 16/21 and commence the training during the period September to April.
Salary and employment terms are generally in line with comparable careers which place similarly high demands on trainees. Within the three year training period it is likely that a Company car will be made available to the individual for business and private use. Working apparel and safety clothing is provided by the Company to maintain a strong corporate image.
The training period complies fully with HSE safety requirements and the 48 hour working week. There is a minimum of five weeks annual holiday.
It is likely that trainees demonstrating the right attitude and abilities will at some point be required to undertake part of their training/work experience in UK locations away from their home base, to enable the Company to further assess their personal capabilities. Appropriate additional remuneration is available subject to the requirements/duration of the 'travel' period.
All candidates are initially employed on a probationary period and play an active role within the operational team from the time of joining. International travel may be required when candidates achieve positions with management responsibility.
A career in this exciting business sector harnesses the requirements for strong personal expertise in communication and organisation and an unrivalled opportunity to build an internationally flexible and marketable qualification. Candidates seeking a "9 to 5" job need not apply!
